Characteristics Of The Brazilian Bikini

As anyone who occasionally wears a Brazilian bikini can tell you, the tiny suits still catch people’s eyes and get attention. However, it is hard to compare that reaction to the controversy caused when they first hit the big time. Reactions to it have changed over time, but there is no doubt that it is among the most revealing bathing suits.

Before the advent of the bikini, swimwear for women was uniformly one piece. Exposing the tummy provoked controversy and even proposals to ban it in certain conservative countries. Even where bans were not brought up, it was often socially unacceptable to sport the new suits out in the open. It took until the 1940s to really start seeing the bikini a little more, but even then it was only rarely. Early suits still tended to cover much more than people today would expect.

By the 1960s and 1970s, they grew in popularity to varying degrees in different regions. The skimpy suit graced the fashion capitals of the world and made their way to the general public as well. During this era, the bikini became more common in movies and on television, which helped it slowly trickle down to the general public. It was in South America, though, that it underwent its sexiest modification.

The garment was still composed of two pieces, but the bottom, in particular, was much smaller than suits people had seen previously. This also meant the wearers needed to feel comfortable with their body shape and confident showing it off in public settings. The timid or the easily-embarrassed avoided it all together.

The trademark of this style is a low cut bottom that hugs the hips. The front offers coverage, but the fabric thins around the sides and leaves the back more exposed. That said, there are variations, from the tanga, which still covers some of the back, to skimpier versions that run only a small sliver of fabric down the back as a connector.

The tops can also be quite revealing, so it would be a mistake to consider them as the more conservative part of the suit. This is not the case. However, for those who want more support, there are tube tops on the market. Otherwise, skimpier versions are essentially triangles of fabric that fit over the breasts, connected in the back by typically small straps. Some women looking for more support but without the tube top go for intermediate models.

The heyday of this suit soon ended, though. The eighties and nineties saw women shy away from the design, opting for new styles. Some saw this as a backlash during more culturally conservative times. But, now some people are predicting the rise of its popularity again as it appears at beach locations worldwide.

In the fashion world, things come and go in cycles, and it may just be that the Brazilian bikini is about to ride in on a new fashion wave. This has to do with a mixture of factors, from societal values to media exposure to the aesthetic preferences of different generations. Whatever the reason for its recent surge, you can never truly count this provocative model out, as its colorful history proves.

This year, invest in Brazilian bikinis or thong bikinis and you will be turning heads all summer.
