Engineering jobs in recession times – The situation now

One such area where demand remains strong is in civil engineering. Though the construction industry has faltered badly, ongoing projects have seen civil engineers jobs still be readily found.
A large driving force in the ongoing strength of the civil engineering has been the abundance of public sector projects. Playing a large part in particular has been the huge works that continue for the Olympics in London in 2012.
Some would reasonably assume this work covers London; but the projects are spread out across the all of the UK. Visiting teams need facilities to train of course, whilst the Olympic legacy that is playing such a large part in the central theme is driving the end of public facilities.
Large projects are also playing their part. The redevelopment of Birmingham’s New Street Railway Station and the ongoing development, improvement and expansion of the entire rail network being just two notable mentions.
Public sector spending cuts will no doubt have an effect on projects that have not yet been started. However, such is the nature of the beast these are probably to be heading any funding lists when the public purse strings can be loosened once again.
The construction industry also shows signs of picking up, though insecure times remain on the horizon. Despite these uncertainties, demand for qualified and experienced civil engineers will remain strong. A simple search on popular online job boards continue to return good levels of opportunities for jobs as a civil engineer, project manager roles and those looking for positions such as an electrical engineer job.
As with any other position presently though, employers can be more selective with whom they invite to interview. Subsequently, ensuring experience levels, current knowledge, and demonstrable skills are maintained is critical to securing the chance to get in front of the panel.
